The Science and Origin of Prehnite
Prehnite is a calcium-aluminosilicate mineral that crystallizes in the form of lumps, globules, grapes and stalactites. Prehnite rarely occur in crystalline form, but when they do, they are usually very small prismatic crystals. Prehnite is usually pale yellow or green in color, but can also be seen white, tan, gray, or colorless. This mineral was first discovered in 1788 by AG Werner. Werner named it after the Dutch military colonel Hendrik Von Prehn, who was responsible for the area where the mineral was discovered. Since then, prehnite have been discovered in China, Scotland, Australia, the United States and New Zealand. In 2000, an extremely rare orange prehnite stone was discovered at the N’chwaning mine in South Africa. By 2002, the veins were completely depleted, and the orange grapestone had not yet been found again.
